Bed Bug Treatment Prep Guide

How to Prepare for Bed Bug Treatment

Proper preparation is one of the most important factors in bed bug treatment success. Homes that are thoroughly prepped before treatment typically need fewer visits and see faster elimination. Follow every step below before your technician arrives.

1. Launder Everything from Affected Rooms

Wash ALL bedding, linens, pillowcases, and clothing from affected rooms in hot water and dry on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes. Place cleaned items in sealed plastic bags and keep them sealed until after treatment is complete.

Heat is what kills bed bugs and their eggs — the dryer is more important than the washer. Items that can’t be washed (stuffed animals, pillows, shoes) can go through a dryer cycle on high heat for 30 minutes.

2. Declutter — But Don’t Spread the Problem

Clear loose items from around beds, nightstands, dressers, and closets. Place items in sealed bags or plastic bins.

Do NOT move items from affected rooms to other rooms. This is the most common mistake — it spreads the infestation to areas that were previously clean. Bag everything in the room it’s already in.

3. Vacuum Thoroughly

Vacuum mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, baseboards, furniture seams, and carpet edges. Pay attention to cracks, crevices, and tufted seams where bed bugs hide during the day.

Dispose of the vacuum bag or canister contents in a sealed bag outside immediately after vacuuming. Do not leave the vacuum inside — bed bugs can crawl back out.

4. Pull Furniture Away from Walls

Move beds and furniture 12–18 inches away from walls. Remove wall hangings, clocks, picture frames, and decorations near beds. Bed bugs travel along walls and hide behind mounted items.

5. Secure Pets and Plan to Stay Out

Keep pets out of treated areas. Plan to keep people and animals out of treated rooms until your technician confirms it is safe to return. Your technician will give specific re-entry instructions based on the treatment method used.

Follow-Up Treatment Prep

Your follow-up treatment (typically 14 days after the initial visit) is critical for breaking the egg cycle. Bed bug eggs hatch in 6–10 days — the follow-up targets newly hatched bugs before they can reproduce.

Repeat all of the prep steps above before your follow-up visit. The follow-up is not optional — skipping it or skipping the prep significantly reduces treatment effectiveness.

What to Expect After Treatment

  • Some bed bug activity may continue for a few days after treatment as bugs emerge from hiding and contact treated surfaces. This is normal.
  • Continue sleeping in treated rooms. Abandoning the room forces bed bugs to travel further to feed, potentially spreading to other areas.
  • Do not apply store-bought sprays or foggers. They can scatter bed bugs and interfere with professional treatment.
