Flea Treatment Prep Guide
How to Prepare for Flea Treatment
Flea treatment works best when the home, pets, and outdoor areas are treated together. The prep you do before service directly affects how quickly the flea cycle breaks.
1. Vacuum Everything
Vacuum all carpets, rugs, furniture edges, pet resting areas, and cracks along baseboards before service. Vibration from vacuuming stimulates flea pupae to emerge from their cocoons, making them vulnerable to treatment.
Dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed bag outside immediately after. Do not leave flea-contaminated debris in the house.
2. Wash Pet Bedding and Fabric
Wash pet bedding, blankets, throws, and washable pet covers on a hot cycle before service. If items can’t be washed, bag them and run them through a high-heat dryer cycle for 30 minutes.
3. Coordinate Pet Flea Control with Your Veterinarian
Professional home treatment eliminates fleas in the environment, but your pets need their own flea prevention to stop the cycle from restarting. Talk to your vet about a flea preventative before or on the day of service.
Treating the home without treating the pets — or vice versa — lets the cycle continue.
4. Clear Access to Treatment Areas
Move furniture, toys, and pet items away from baseboards and walls so the technician can treat floor edges and cracks where flea larvae develop. Pick up items from floors in affected rooms.
5. Keep People and Pets Off Treated Areas Until Dry
After treatment, stay off treated surfaces until they are fully dry — typically 2–4 hours. Your technician will give specific re-entry instructions.
What to Expect After Treatment
Flea activity can continue for 2–4 weeks after treatment as immature fleas (pupae) emerge from their cocoons. This is normal — the treatment kills them on contact as they emerge.
Continued vacuuming after service is essential. Vacuum daily for at least two weeks after treatment. This stimulates remaining pupae to hatch into the treated environment.
