Rodent Service Prep Guide
How to Prepare for Rodent Service
Whether it’s an inspection, trapping, or exclusion job, a little prep helps your technician identify entry points, place equipment, and complete the work efficiently.
1. Clear Access to Key Areas
Open up access to attics, garages, crawlspaces, utility closets, and exterior perimeter areas where activity has been noticed. Move boxes and stored items away from walls so the technician can inspect behind and beneath them.
Rodents typically enter along rooflines, gable vents, dryer vents, A/C lines, garage door seals, and plumbing penetrations. The technician needs to see and reach these areas.
2. Seal and Store Food
Store loose food, pet food, bird seed, and trash in sealed containers. This makes it easier to identify new activity after service and reduces the food supply that sustains the population.
Remove pet food bowls from the floor overnight if possible — rodents are most active between dusk and dawn.
3. Secure Pets
Keep pets secured during the visit. Do not allow pets to interact with traps, bait stations, or monitoring devices. If you have cats, let your technician know — cats can interfere with rodent trapping effectiveness.
Do not move traps or monitoring devices unless your technician asks you to. Moving traps can reset the timeline and reduce catch rates.
4. Note Activity Locations
If you hear active movement inside a wall, ceiling, or attic, note the location and time of day. This helps the technician prioritize placement and inspection.
What to Expect
- Trapping visits involve placing snap traps or monitoring devices in activity areas. Your technician will return to check and reset traps on a regular schedule.
- Exclusion work involves sealing entry points with steel mesh, caulk, foam, or hardware cloth. This may take multiple visits depending on the scope.
- Some activity may continue after initial service as rodents encounter new traps or as exclusion work progresses. Your technician will adjust the approach based on results.
