Suspected German cockroach activity deserves a confirmed identification and an assessment of where the insects are living. A single photograph cannot establish how far activity extends through a home or shared building.

Start with identification and the affected areas

Compare the German cockroach profile with your observation. Record the room, time, and whether you saw one insect or repeated activity. Include a close-up and a photo of the surrounding area when possible.

UF/IFAS describes an assessment-based approach that combines inspection, monitoring, sanitation, and targeted management. This gives an inspection a concrete purpose: establish the problem and choose the response around the findings. UF/IFAS German cockroach management

Make the inspection findings specific

Ask the technician to distinguish an identification from an estimate of how far activity extends. The first question is which cockroach was observed. The second is where inspection or monitoring found evidence. A general answer such as roaches in the kitchen leaves both the treatment boundary and follow-up unclear.

A useful report might separate the kitchen, an adjoining utility area, and areas that could not be accessed. Ask which observations support including each area in the program. If the proposal includes monitoring, ask where the monitoring information will be recorded and how it will inform the next service decision.

Keep your own sighting notes consistent: date, room, location within the room, and whether you saw a live insect or another sign. Avoid combining older observations with new ones without dates. The distinction helps everyone discuss whether activity is continuing, shifting location, or has not been observed again.

Prepare information that can change the plan

Use the pest observation checklist to record sightings in separate rooms. Keep a list of products already used, with dates. Note inaccessible areas instead of assuming they are clear.

For an apartment or condominium, identify who can authorize access and coordinate work in shared spaces. Ask the property manager which areas a contractor is responsible for inspecting. A proposal for your unit should explain its boundaries clearly.

What should a treatment proposal explain?

Ask the technician to identify the confirmed pest, the areas included, preparation instructions, and the monitoring or follow-up that applies. Ask what happens if activity continues and which tasks belong to the resident or property manager.

Cleaning and accessible food-storage changes can support the work, but they do not prove that an established infestation has been resolved. Avoid judging the result solely by how recently a room was cleaned or sprayed.

Common questions

Is general perimeter service enough?

Do not assume that a general pest plan includes a corrective German cockroach program. Compare the written scope and ask about that pest explicitly. The one-time versus ongoing service guide explains how to compare the two purchasing decisions.

For current pricing, start with the calculator. If the situation needs an inspection, request a specific quote rather than applying a generic price to unknown conditions.

What should you monitor afterward?

Keep dated observations from the same areas and follow the technician’s monitoring instructions. Report continued activity with the location and date so the follow-up decision is based on evidence.
